Our intervention tools (i.e., BITS, Carey Guides, and Driver Workbook) are best used once the criminogenic needs are identified. As such, we assume that agencies have adopted actuarial assessments and then target our cognitive tools to the identified needs.

That said, we know that there are a number of agencies that do not have an actuarial assessment for cost or other reasons. Therefore, we have created a self-assessment in one of our Carey Guides: Case Planning. This assessment can be used in lieu of an actuarial one. We want to emphatically state, however, that while this tool was created using the seminal criminogenic need research by Donald Andrews and James Bonta, it is not actuarial and should be viewed accordingly. It was created to help those without such assessments because something is better than nothing. We have a number of customers who are using this tool for this purpose.
