The copyright on the Carey Guides allows those who purchase a set (either in paper or electronically) unlimited use of the tools. Those who purchase the paper version can make unlimited photocopies of the portions of the Guides containing the tools—both the worksheets and the instructions. Note: The copyright prohibits printing out the front matter (the information at the front of a Guide). Those purchasing the electronic version have the same rights (to print the tools and instructions, in unlimited quantities).

While we strongly recommend that staff have their own, individual access to these materials (either a set of the paper Guides, or an individual license to access the tools electronically), we know that sometimes this is not possible. Therefore, the copyright does allow sharing the tools—consistent with the copyright noted above—with people employed by the same agency or department. Note: Staff from one agency cannot photocopy, print, or give the tools to staff from another agency; however, they can show them the tools if, for example, those staff are considering purchasing the Guides.

If you wish to provide access to the tools to members of your agency who work in a different location, this can be done in one of two ways:

  1. Purchase one or more hard copies or electronic licenses for staff, or transfer an electronic license to another staff member.
  2. Print the tools (and instructions, if desired) and share them in hard copy.

There's one other copyright rule to keep in mind: Only completed Guide tools can be scanned; the copyright prohibits scanning blank tools.
