The BITS tools were created after the development of the Carey Guides. We conducted an extensive research review for each topic contained in the Guides. This research was then used to develop the BITS. The attached research summary shows the citations for each Guide. The sections in the research summary that were used to guide the development of the BITS are as follows:

  • Who I Spend Time With: see Antisocial Associates and Engaging Prosocial Others citations
  • Overcoming Thinking Traps: see Antisocial Thinking citations
  • Problem Solving: see Interpersonal Skills and Problem Solving citations
  • Decision Making: see Motivating Offenders to Change citations
  • Overcoming Automatic Responses: see Substance Abuse citations

While Thinking Traps relate to the research on cognition’s influence on crime (see citations under Antisocial Thinking), we conducted a separate literature search before creating this tool. Although we did not maintain research citations for this, a simple Google search would yield a significant number of hits, including the now-dated work of Samenow and Yochelson:

  • Samenow, S.E. (2002). Straight talk about criminals: Understanding and Treating Antisocial Individuals. Rowman & Littlefield Publishers.
  • Yochelson, S., & Samenow, S. (2000). The criminal personality: A profile for change. Jason Aronson.
  • Yochelson, S., & Samenow, S. (1995). The criminal personality: The change process. Jason Aronson.
